About

AOD Actors of Dionysus  is the only organisation in the UK dedicated to creating innovative versions of Greek drama and new writing inspired by myth.

We also specialise in creative projects and workshops that develop young people’s skills and confidence and promote accessibility and opportunity.

We use performance to stimulate an understanding of, and engagement with Greek myth, revealing the power and relevance of these epic stories to make magic from myth. By exploring modern issues through the lens of ancient Greek drama we aim to connect with current political, environmental and cultural shifts, making performance work that excites and provokes.

Founded in 1993 by David Stuttard to put flesh on the bones of ancient Greek drama Tamsin Shasha joined shortly after as Joint Artistic Director and became sole Artistic Director in 2004.

As an award winning touring company aod actors of dionysus has performed both in the UK and internationally performing in theatres, national museums and historic landmarks including ancient Greek and Roman theatres.

Building up an extensive track record of productions described by The Guardian as ‘direct and accessible’, our projects extend to workshops in schools, enrichment days and children’s shows. We also act as External Consultants on key projects, eg our Executive Director role for the KCL Greek Play.

Given time and support, aod could restore the Classics to their proper place in the theatre repertoire, which would be something like a National Classical theatre.

Founded on critical thinking, an engagement with cultural heritage and rigorous research, AOD Actors of Dionysus are passionate about extending the reach and impact of what we offer, especially to those who have not had access to publicly funded cultural activity and we continually explore ways to use digital media to to extend our reach beyond the physical.
